About Us

A team for more than 20 years, Tommy and Alice Magaha have more than 60 years combined experience in the horse industry. While Tommy focused on polo, Alice spent more than 10 years on the hunter/jumper circuit. From 1990 to 2002, the Magahas managed the boarding facility at Hedgeland Stable in Waterford, Virginia. When Hedgeland was sold in 2003, the Magahas opened Rockin' M Acres. In addition to other achievements, the entire family qualified and rode in the U.S. Team Penning Finals in Texas from 1997 through 2001.

Alice Rowan Magaha

Alice teaches riding lessons to students in all stages in the Hunter/Jumper discipline. She also coaches combined training riders who want to improve their Stadium Jumping rounds. In addition, she teaches Western Riding for those who want to trail ride, compete in team penning, or just brush up their riding skills.

Alice began riding at the age of 8. She got her first horse at age 14 and has owned horses ever since, even throughout her seven years as an officer in the United States Navy.

By 1975, Alice had upgraded to a Quarter Horse gelding name Pyewacket. Together they went on to win on the AHSA (now U.S. Equestrian Federation - USEF) "A" circuit in the Jumper Division. By 1978, they had won the first Zone award of the AHSA in Region 3 in the Amateur/Owner Jumper Division. That same year Pyewacket was the Reserve Amateur/Owner Jumper Champion at the Washington International Horse Show.

Pyewacket is the last horse to win the open jumper challenge trophy for the WBTA. In 1979 Pyewacket retired the WBTA Challenge Trophy and dedicated the Pyewacket Challenge Trophy, which has not been won. Alice and Pyewacket continued to show and win on the "A" circuit until Pyewacket was retired in 1983.

Tommy Magaha

Tommy manages the Rockin' M Acres boarding stable and is available by appointment to give team penning clinics and coach at local team penning competitions. With his extensive knowledge of fencing, barn construction and equine management, he is available to consult on any aspect of setting up large or small equine facilities and operations.

Tommy grew up in Maryland at Al-Mariah Farm, one of the nation’s leading Arabian breeding farms. Tommy learned to ride and showed as a youngster on some of the best Arabians in the country. He gained his horse sense from his father, Wilson, and his knowledge of general horse health from Dr. Courtwright, the vet for Al-Mariah Farm.

At age thirteen, Tommy started playing polo. After serving in the U.S. Army, Tommy returned home and renewed his interest in polo. He groomed for Nordy Knox, one of the top polo players on the East Coast. They traveled to South America where Tommy played with top polo players in Argentina.

In 1972 Tommy opened the Hidden Valley boarding stable in Maryland. He grew the property from eighteen to forty stalls by the time he sold the property in 1980. Tommy went on to own a barn building and fencing business.

From 1990 to 2002, Tommy managed the 54-stall boarding facility at Hedgeland Stable. During this time he was introduced the sport of team penning by a fellow polo player. After only one year of competing, Tommy was ranked as an open rider. He has won team penning competitions from New York to Virginia since 1994. He held team penning competitions and clinics from the local to regional level at Hedgeland Stable. He also sponsored the first team pennings held at the Washington International Horse Show and the Montgomery County Fair.

Chelsea Magaha

Chelsea has been around horses from the time she could walk. At age five, she was showing in the local leadline classes. By nine she had won the Pre-Short Stirrup Year End Award at Mark Wonderly's show series held at Morvan Park. Chelsea branched out into western riding and joined the Catoctin Vaulting Club in Leesburg, Virginia.

In 1994, Chelsea rode in the first team penning ever held during the Washington International Horse Show. She rode with her grandfather, Wilson, and her dad, Tommy. Her team represented three generations of the Magahas. The next year she won two belt buckles, which sparked her competitive nature. Chelsea has won many buckles and a total of eight trophy saddles as a result of winning the most money in the different divisions on the United States Team Penning Association (USTPA). In 1998 Chelsea had the distinction of being the only junior rider to ever qualify for all five divisions offered at the USTPA finals, including the Open (against professional riders), the Pro-Am, Novice, Senior Youth and Youth Divisions.

Chelsea graduated from Loudoun Valley High School in 2002. She continues to team pen while attending college. Chelsea is now also avid barrel racer.

Megan Magaha

Megan Magaha was born in 1987. By the age of five, she was competing in leadline classes. After one of her shows, Alice took the picture at left. That photo was one of 99 photos selected out of 200,000 to win the annual Parade Magazine photo contest in 1993. It was published along with the other winning photos that year in a book called "The Champions."

At the age of seven, Megan began competing with her family in team penning competitions. Over the years, Megan has won belt buckles in all divisions. In 1999 she won two trophy saddles in the Jr. Youth and Novice divisions. That same year, her family qualified to go to Texas for the USTPA National Finals. At the finals, Megan was 6th out of 75 teams in the Jr. Youth.

Megan graduated from Clarke County High School in 2005 and will pursue massage therapy.
